  • ClearNot on any list we track, and no rule flags it.
  • WatchBreaks Instagram’s hashtag advice: trades follows, says nothing about the post, repeats, or goes past the limit of 5.

The 1-minute check

How to check if you are shadowbanned on Instagram

Instagram does not use the word “shadowban”. It has a screen that answers the real question: Account Status. It shows whether your posts can be recommended to people who don’t follow you, which is what most people mean by a shadowban.

  1. 1Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. 2Tap the menu (three lines) in the top right.
  3. 3Under “More info and support”, tap Account Status.

Those are the phone steps. On a computer: click More in the bottom left, then Settings, then Account Status below “More info and support”. Steps from Instagram’s Help Center.

What you will find there

  • Can your content be recommended?

Professional accounts see whether Instagram may show their posts in Explore, Reels, Feed, Search and Suggested Accounts to people who don’t follow them. If not, you see a sample post, the guideline it broke, and a way to edit it, remove it or request a review.

  • Removed content

Posts, stories or comments taken down for going against the Community Standards.

  • Features you can’t use

What is limited on your account right now, and how to appeal.

Two lines from Instagram’s page on recommendation eligibility worth knowing: being eligible “doesn’t guarantee that your content will be recommended”, and even if you are not eligible, “your content can still show up for your followers”.

All clear and reach still dropped? That can be normal. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, wrote in 2021: “We can’t promise you that you’ll consistently reach the same amount of people when you post. The truth is most of your followers won’t see what you share, because most look at less than half of their Feed.”

How to test any hashtag yourself

No checker can see Instagram’s settings for a tag, this one included. Instagram can: open the tag while logged in. Tap “Check it yourself” on any result above, or search the tag in the app. Then look for these signs.

  • It won’t come up

Instagram says a tag “may not be searchable” when the posts or text tied to it keep breaking its rules. Help Center

  • Recent posts are hidden

A notice says recent posts are hidden. Reporters saw it on #philly, #kansas and #easter.

  • Only old top posts

A few top posts and nothing new. #Kansas showed about 30 top posts the morning it was hidden.

“Recent posts from #kansas are currently hidden because the community has reported some content that may not meet Instagram’s community guidelines.”

If recent posts load and they look like yours, the tag works today. Look at what is on it too: Instagram says it may remove posts from a tag’s results when people use that tag for rule-breaking content (Help Center), so a tag full of spam is a poor neighbor even when it is not restricted. Status changes: Instagram says it reviews these tags and can make them searchable again.

One thing that is not a ban: if your account is private, your posts never appear on public hashtag pages (Help Center).

Every hashtag on the banned lists, A to Z

160 tags appear on at least one of the three public lists we track. 65 are on all three, and 51 are on only one. Each row says which lists name it and when they were dated. “On and off” means bundle.social files it under temporary bans. Tap the link icon to copy a link straight to a tag.

Why this page says “reported”, not “banned”

Instagram publishes no list of restricted hashtags and no way to look up a tag’s status. Every banned-hashtag list online, and every checker built on one, is someone’s compilation. We read three of the most visible ones, last on Oct 9, 2026:

ListDatedTagsHow it was made
KickstaFirst posted Oct 1, 2025, updated Oct 6, 2026128Does not say how the list was made or tested.
bundle.socialPosted Aug 17, 2026. Splits its list into “permanently” and “temporarily” banned.94Does not say how the list was made. The same page still gives the old 30-hashtag limit.
Tamela D’AmicoPosted May 31, 2025, “updated as of May 2025”112Says her team researches bans. No method or test dates given.

What we found when we lined them up:

  • They overlap heavily: 65 tags are on all three, and two of them share the same odd entry, #graffitiigers. That looks like copying more than testing.
  • They disagree. Kicksta says #kansascity works. D’Amico lists it as banned.
  • Some entries trace back to one bad day. #kansas was hidden on the morning of May 12, 2016, and #easter on Easter Sunday 2019. Lists still carry both.
  • bundle.social’s page, dated August 2026, still gives the old 30-hashtag limit. Instagram’s cap is 5.

So a tag here is “reported restricted”, with its lists and dates, and never “banned”. A tag that is not here is not proven safe either. Opening it on Instagram is the test.

The rules the checker adds, and where they come from

  • More than 5 tags. “You can use up to 5 tags on a post. If you include more than 5 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won’t post.” Instagram Help Center. The cap rolled out from December 2025 (Social Samosa).
  • Trading likes or follows (#followforfollow, #l4l, #likeback). Meta’s spam rules forbid “selling, buying, or exchanging for engagement, such as likes, shares, views, follows, clicks, use of specific hashtags”. Meta Community Standards.
  • Generic tags. When it set the limit, Instagram said “fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones” work better, and named #reels and #explore (Social Samosa). Flagging similar tags like #viral, #fyp or #instagood is our call, by analogy, and shows as “watch”, never as restricted.
  • Special characters. “Spaces and special characters, like $ or %, won’t work.” Instagram Help Center. The checker shows where a tag gets cut, as in #self-care.
  • Repeats. A tag used twice adds nothing. That one is common sense, not an Instagram rule.

Matching ignores capital letters, so #Kansas and #kansas count as the same tag. Lists, Instagram pages and quotes last checked Oct 9, 2026. Related reading from Instagram: why some posts don’t appear in Explore and search and its Recommendations Guidelines.

Questions people ask

How can I check if a hashtag is banned on Instagram?

Open the tag on Instagram while logged in: search it, or visit instagram.com/explore/tags/ followed by the tag. If the tag will not come up in search, the page shows a notice that recent posts are hidden, or it shows only a few top posts and nothing new, it is restricted right now. Instagram has no public list and no checker of its own, so any tool, this one included, can only tell you what has been reported.

What hashtags will get you shadowbanned?

Instagram has never published one. Its Help Center says a hashtag can stop being searchable when the posts or the text tied to it keep breaking its rules, and that it reviews those tags and can bring them back. Meta’s spam rules also forbid trading engagement, which covers tags like #followforfollow and #like4like. The long lists online are compiled by marketers, and none of the ones we checked says how it was tested.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?

5. Instagram’s Help Center says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and that a comment with more will not post. The limit replaced the old 30 and rolled out from December 2025.

What is the 3 hashtag rule?

It is not an Instagram rule. Instagram tested limits as low as three hashtags with some accounts before it settled on 5 for everyone in December 2025. Using three or so well-chosen tags is fine, but the actual cap is 5.

Is the Instagram shadowban real?

Instagram does not use the word. In 2021 Adam Mosseri wrote that “shadowbanning” is a broad term people use for many different experiences. What Instagram does confirm is that content can be removed, or kept out of recommendations to people who do not follow you. A professional account can see that in Account Status, with the post it applies to.

Will one banned hashtag hurt my whole post?

Instagram has not said. Many articles claim one bad tag hides the whole post from every hashtag page, but none we read cites Instagram for it. What Instagram does say is that posts on a tag used for rule-breaking content may be removed from that tag’s search results. The safe move is simple: drop any tag you are unsure about.

Why is my hashtag not showing on Instagram?

Three common reasons from Instagram’s own Help Center: your account is private, so your posts never appear on public hashtag pages; the tag is not searchable at the moment; or the tag contains a space or a special character like $, % or a dash, which cuts it short. The checker above flags the last one.
