Where every number comes from
Each row links to the page that states it: the platform's own help center, developer docs or protocol files. Size guides on marketing blogs copy each other, so an old number can live on for years. This sheet does not use them. Every source was last opened on Oct 9, 2026.
When a platform gives only a ratio or a range, the row says so and the frame is drawn from the ratio. When it gives no ratio at all (a caption limit, a file cap), the frame is a dotted square. Nothing is rounded up into a pixel size the platform never published.
Some limits differ between the app and the API that scheduling tools post through. Instagram is the clearest case: the app keeps photos up to 3:4 and takes 20 items in a carousel, while the publishing API still stops at 4:5 and 10 items. Both are listed.
Four numbers most size guides still get wrong
- Instagram feed photos go to 3:4.Instagram's help page now says it keeps photos between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which is 1080 × 1440 at the tall end. Many guides still stop at 4:5.
- Instagram allows 5 hashtags, not 30. The Help Center changed between November 2025 and January 2026.
- YouTube thumbnails are 3840 × 2160 now. YouTube recommends 4K thumbnails, with a 50 MB cap from a computer. 1280 × 720 still works, since the minimum width is 640.
- The LinkedIn Page cover is 1512 × 256.That is LinkedIn's recommended size today. The personal profile cover is a different shape: 1584 × 396.

Questions people ask
What size is an Instagram post?
Instagram keeps photos 1080 pixels wide at any ratio from 1.91:1 to 3:4. That means 1080 × 1080 for a square, 1080 × 566 for the widest landscape and 1080 × 1440 for the tallest portrait. Other ratios get cropped.
Is Instagram 9:16 or 4:5?
Both, for different things. Reels and stories fill a 9:16 frame. Feed photos go up to 3:4 in the app. Photos posted through the Instagram publishing API, which scheduling tools use, still stop at 4:5.
What size is an Instagram story?
Instagram recommends 9:16 for stories to avoid cropping or blank space. A story video posted through the API can be 3 to 60 seconds and up to 100 MB.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube now recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels at 16:9, at least 640 pixels wide, as JPG or PNG. Desktop uploads can be up to 50 MB and phone uploads up to 2 MB. Shorts thumbnails are 2160 × 3840 at 9:16.
What size is a LinkedIn banner?
A personal profile cover is 1584 × 396 pixels and under 8 MB. A LinkedIn Page cover is 1512 × 256 pixels, PNG or JPEG, 3 MB at most.
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?
Five per post, according to the Instagram Help Center. The same page said 30 until late 2025. A comment can still hold up to 30 hashtags.
Which social media uses 1920 × 1080?
That is 16:9. YouTube thumbnails and channel art use 16:9, and X recommends 16:9 for landscape video (1280 × 720). Flipped to 1080 × 1920 it is the 9:16 frame of reels, stories and Shorts.
Can I put this cheat sheet on my own site?
Yes. Pick a platform and a theme in the embed section, copy the code and paste it into your page. The widget stays current when we update the numbers, and it links back here as its source.
