Instagram frames

Square is 1080×1080. Portrait is 1080×1350, which is 4:5. Landscape is 1080×566, which is 1.91:1. A Story or Reel is 1080×1920, which is 9:16. The profile picture preset is 320×320. Fit is the default, so the whole photo stays and the gaps are padding or a blur.

The profile grid then shows a 3:4 center crop. A 4:5 portrait loses a little of each side, about 6% of the width. Keep faces and text away from the left and right edges if the photo will sit on your profile.

Questions people ask

What size should an Instagram image be?

Export 1080 by 1080 for a square post, 1080 by 1350 for a 4:5 portrait, 1080 by 566 for a 1.91:1 landscape, and 1080 by 1920 for a Story or Reel. The profile picture preset is 320 by 320. The profile grid then center-crops a portrait toward 3:4.

How do I resize an image for Instagram without cropping?

Leave the mode on fit. The photo stays whole and the empty space is filled with a color you pick, or with a blurred copy of the photo. Crop is available if you want the frame filled instead.

Is 4:3 or 16:9 better for Instagram?

Neither for a feed post. The feed shows up to 4:5 tall and 1.91:1 wide, so a 4:3 photo fits but leaves space, and a 16:9 photo shows as a thin strip. Use 4:5 for a post and 9:16 for a Story or Reel. A 16:9 photo can be fitted into either here without cropping.

Does this page upload my photo?

No. The resize happens in your browser. The download stays on your device. Closing the tab drops the file.
