0 / 280 weighted characters
Each http or https link counts as 23. Each emoji counts as 2, including a joined sequence such as a family. Each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as 2. A photo or video you attach does not count. Bio is 160 and the name is 50, on free and Premium accounts.
How X counts
A standard post allows 280 weighted characters. X Premium allows 25,000. The bio is 160 and the name is 50 on every account. This page uses the same weights for all three fields.
An http or https link counts as 23, however long the URL is. An emoji counts as 2. A Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as 2. Letters in English count as 1. A photo or video attached to the post does not count toward the text.
If a draft is over 280, the post tab splits it on spaces into a thread. The split is a draft for you to edit, not a post that gets published.
Questions people ask
How long is 280 characters?
About 40 to 50 words of plain English, and less when you use emoji or Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters, because those count as 2. A URL counts as 23 no matter how long the link is.
Is Twitter still limited to 140 characters?
No. A standard X post allows 280 weighted characters. The old 140 limit ended in 2017. X Premium posts can run to 25,000. The bio limit is still 160, and the name limit is 50.
What is the 4-1-1 rule on Twitter?
It is a content-mix guideline, not an X setting. Andrew Davis and Joe Pulizzi described it as: for every post that promotes you, share four useful pieces from other people and one reshare. It does not change the character limit.
Does Twitter have a character count?
Yes. The X app counts as you type. This page uses the public rules: each URL counts as 23, and emoji and CJK characters count as 2. Media you attach does not count toward the text. Toggle 280 or the 25,000 Premium limit.
